In a celebration of creativity and legacy, kó is proud to present "Kindred Spirits: A Gathering of the Aka Circle of Artists," an exhibition featuring works by fifteen of Nigeria’s most revered artists. These artists, members of the legendary Aka Circle of Exhibiting Artists, are known for their groundbreaking contributions to Nigerian contemporary art.
Founded in 1985 by celebrated artists El Anatsui and Obiora Udechukwu, the Aka Circle became a pivotal force in Nigerian art, known for challenging Western art norms through radical studio experimentation. Between 1986 and 2000, the Aka Circle made waves with exhibitions that pushed the boundaries of artistic expression, blending indigenous traditions with modernist techniques.
Now, for the first time in nearly two decades, this influential group is reuniting under the curatorship of Iheanyi Onwuegbucha. The exhibition showcases the work of Tayo Adenaike, Chris Afuba, El Anatsui, Chike Aniakor, Obiora Anidi, Ifedioramma Dike, and others, highlighting four decades of artistic evolution. The Aka Circle has expanded the boundaries of what contemporary Nigerian art can be, both conceptually and aesthetically, and this exhibit offers a rare opportunity to witness the diverse paths these artists have taken since their last show in 2005.
Kindred Spirits is not just an exhibition but a historic event, offering a glimpse into the evolution of Nigeria’s contemporary art scene while honoring the collective spirit that first brought these artists together.
